Helping Children and Families After Disasters

Disaster changes lives—especially for children.   Whatever type of disaster or trauma they have experienced, children often need support to process what has happened.  Even in the most difficult of circumstances, children and families can find strength and resilience within their community.  In this webinar, learn more about the efforts of Sesame Street in Communities and Camp Noah to build resiliency skills.

Sesame Street has created, Here for Each Other: Helping Families After Emergencies to help adults and children cope with disasters.  In this webinar, learn more about the bilingual (English and Spanish) resources available to provide ways to help families talk about what happened, while remaining hopeful for better things to come. With this information families can create a comfortable and caring environment, no matter where they are, even when they are not surrounded by their familiar things. Resources include an online toolkit which contains Sesame Street videos, highlighting the importance of asking questions, showing comfort, and coping with emotions.

Camp Noah, a week long event, provides a safe and caring environment where children build resiliency skills within the familiarity of their own communities, using a proven curriculum designed to help children process their disaster and/or trauma experience through creative activities and play.  To date, Camp Noah has been hosted in 29 states and Puerto Rico in response to a wide range of natural and human-caused disasters.  Since 1997, 273 camps have served nearly 14,000 elementary-age children.  Learn more about the valuable services that are offered to encourage children to face their fears, grieve their losses, identify and share their unique gifts and talents, and plan for an amazing future.
