About the Biennial Symposium

 

Child Care Aware® of America's Symposium is a biennial event that brings together individuals from across the country to discuss research, policy and practices related to the early child care and education community.

This year's four-day event offers opportunities to connect with thought leaders, Congressional staff and early education professionals from across the nation. It concludes with participants spending May 6th meeting with Congressional representatives from their states educating them about the importance of policy changes that advance safe, affordable, and high-quality child care for families across the country.

Who Should Attend?

 

 

Anyone engaged in the field of child care or has an interest in or concern for accessible, quality, affordable child care will find Symposium a valuable investment. Child Care Resource and Referral executives and their teams appreciate the professional development and networking opportunities, their policy staff take advantage of the Day on the Hill event, and child care providers/early educators take away innovative ideas and approaches to enhancing family and community engagement opportunities.

Family Advocacy Network

 

Child Care Aware® of America has been bringing members of our Family Advocacy Network to Washington, D.C., for over ten years as part of our commitment to elevating family voices in important policy conversations. The 2020 Symposium presents another opportunity for a select number of family advocates to join the event via sponsorships that include paid travel, room and board. Applications will be open from January 2– 17, 2020 and awards will be announced by the review panel later in the month. 

 

Family advocates selected to attend this year’s event can look forward to building their advocacy skills during trainings lead by policy experts in the industry. They will network with experienced advocates and state and national leaders. And, they will meet with Congressional representatives from their states to advocate for policy changes that advance safe, affordable, and high-quality child care for all families across the country. Before advocates leave the event, they also will connect with local Child Care Resource and Referral agencies to continue their advocacy journey in their home communities.

 

This year’s awardees will represent a spectrum of child care experiences and include both new and seasoned advocates. While we are doing targeted recruitment in select states (Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maine, Michigan, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Ohio, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin) applicants from all over the nation will be considered in our competitive review processes. Read reflections from one of last year’s advocates to learn more about past events and send your questions to FamilyEngagement@usa.childcareaware.org

Emergency Preparedness for Child Care Providers: Training-of-Trainers Opportunity

 

Children and families count on providers to be prepared when disasters strike. Help child care providers take action with this special pre-conference training-of-trainers opportunity.

 

Child Care Aware® of America’s emergency preparedness training-of-trainers gives participants the resources needed to help child care providers:

  • Understand recognized child care emergency preparedness standards and discuss how to incorporate them into a written emergency plan
  • Identify and discuss emergencies that may affect their program
  • Recognize ways to support the emotional needs of children and caregivers after an emergency
  • Identify resources available to support child care emergency preparedness

The training features a variety of instructional approaches, including small group discussions and interactive simulations covering a variety of threats and challenges including natural disasters, infrastructure failure, utility disruptions, and human threats. Training participants will receive a trainer guide, PowerPoint slides, and supplemental resources which may allow them to train the topic to child care providers in their community or state (state trainer/training approval processes should be followed).
