Advocacy is an important part of policy work, and the key to good advocacy is good messaging. Child Care Aware® of America is interested in building demand for healthy child care settings and saw the need to develop messages that will resonate and build support for standards/regulation change with child care teachers and providers. We know that child care teachers and providers want what’s best for children but may initially balk at the imposition of new regulations. We partnered with six states—Alabama, Colorado, Indiana, Missouri, New York, and North Carolina—to conduct focus groups with center-based and family child care providers to see what messages build consensus and demand around nutrition, active play, and screen time policies/standards. We conducted focus groups in six states to ensure we acquired a broad spectrum of cultural, social, and linguistically diverse opinions represented.
